European Network of Cultural Centers (ENCC) issued a research report entitled "Just Sustainability from the Heart of Communities. The Transformative Power of Socio-Cultural Centres" (A. M. Ranczakowska, M. Fraioli, A. Garma, ENCC, May 2024). This research was conducted as part of the project “Culture is everybody: sociocultural centers as catalysts of change for an inclusive and sustainable Europe” (CUBE), co-funded by the Creative Europe programme (CREA-CULT-2021-NET).
This study investigates the roles of sociocultural centers in facilitating Just Sustainability Transitions, which are pivotal for ensuring a harmonious future that balances societal needs with environmental sustainability. By integrating cultural dynamics into the broader sustainability narrative, sociocultural centers emerge as crucial agents in facilitating a transition that is not only ecologically sound but also socially equitable and culturally rich.
Sociocultural centers stand at the forefront of addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our time, including climate change, social inequality, and cultural erosion. By actively participating in Just Sustainability Transitions, such centers not only advocate for a harmonious balance between human and ecological needs but also champion a culturally rich and inclusive approach to sustainability.
The Multicultural Center Brusinka contributed to this research on the roles of sociocultural centers in just sustainability transitions as we have launched an impactful initiative titled the ”Cultural Fusion Social Hub,” designed to cultivate sustainable lifestyles and enhance social cohesion among a diverse tapestry of community members.
It is an example, how a small community center can become a hub for sustainability education.
Our initiative, distinct in its approach, constructs a dynamic space dedicated to the exchange of ideas, learning, and collaborative efforts toward sustainability transitions. Brusinka see ourselves in multiple roles in the process of JST. The center steps into the role of facilitator by organising a variety of events, workshops, and forums that delve into crucial topics such as sustainability, social justice and cultural exchange.
This role is vital in creating a nurturing environment where all participants feel valued and empowered to engage actively.
As an innovator, our Multicultural center implements innovative strategies to tackle social and environmental challenges. We promote participatory decision-making processes that inspire creativity and practical, inclusive solutions. In its educational capacity, Brusinka provides a wealth of resources, training programs, and skill-building workshops. These educational efforts empower community members to act as change-makers, focusing on sustainable living, environmental stewardship, and enhancing intercultural communication.
The Cultural Fusion Social Hub is a vibrant nexus for cultural celebrations, social gatherings, and collaborative projects that unite people across diverse backgrounds. These activities are instrumental inforging strong relationships, building trust, and nurturing a sense of belonging among all participants. Advocacy is also a cornerstone of our mission, as it works tirelessly to influence policies and initiatives that uphold social and environmental justice, equity, and inclusion. The Brusinka Multicultural center collaborates with policymakers, community leaders, and grassroots organisations to dismantle systemic barriers and trying to amplify the voices of marginalised groups in societal decision-making.
